Comvita Manuka Honey Score
Comvita UMFHA member license #1019.
I still remember the first time I opened a jar of Comvita Manuka honey. It was a rainy November day in the afternoon. This particular jar was labelled UMF 10+, and the wonderful aroma of caramelised toffee is still stuck in my nose. Peeking into the jar revealed a dark brown color and a very high degree of viscosity or thickness.
Comvita, a company dedicated to producing natural health products primarily from bee products, was founded in 1974 by Claude Stratford and Alan Bougen. Stratford, who was 60 years of age at the time, started making bee-based products out of his garage. His desire was to connect the community with nature and healthier living.
As the company grew, so did their mission statement. Comvita is not just a producer for Manuka products, they are also at the forefront of innovation and research. No, the company has the biggest level of measurement capability in the world, when it comes to Manuka healing research.
What Mr. Stratford used to call “nature’s Viagra” has become a frontier for scientific explorations and advancements. Throughout the years, Comvita utilized science to better understand, but not alter, nature. They also strived to maintain the purity of the natural sources from which they make their products. Though the company had humble beginnings, it is now New Zealand’s leading producer of Manuka Honey. As such, it owns more beehives than any other bee-keeping enterprise.
Comvita produces a variety of Manuka based products. The company manufactures pure, jarred Manuka honeys meant for internal use and oral consumption. All products are UMF rated, including UMF 5+, 10+, 15+ and even 20+ grade. They also produce medicinal grade Manuka honey products on their Medihoney® line. This includes antibacterial wound gels and eczema creams meant for topical application, as well as other immune support products.
The overall benefits of Manuka honey, particularly that of the grade and quality produced by Comvita, are plentiful. Manuka honey in particular is known for its antibacterial qualities and its ability to help stimulate the production of cells that can repair damage done by infection and injury. It is also known for exceptional anti-inflammatory properties. As such, even in the medical community, medicinal grade Manuka honey (which must be sterile and of the highest quality) is known to be a good topical treatment for skin wounds and burns.
In addition to its topical uses, Manuka honey is also touted as an immune booster. Therefore, it is capable of fighting off various ailments. It is believed to support healthy immune functions and fight off sickness and illness such as common colds, and ear, eye and sinus infections. It is also believed to help with mouth and teeth health, skin health, gastrointestinal health, and some even argue it can help fight cancers. These potential benefits can be gained by the oral consumption of high quality, high grade Manuka honey.
When comparing Comvita Manuka honey with other companies’ Manuka honey products, it tends to be more expensive. Especially for the lower UMF grades (check out my top 5 rankings). However, it evens out for the higher grades, such as Comvita Manuka Honey UMF 15+ or UMF 20+, as they offer larger jars that end up being more cost effective in the long run.
Remember, you get what you pay for. Comvita holds a license through UMF which guarantees independent evaluation of their honey to verify both its purity and grade, and they are committed to ensuring their honey has no additives. Besides its quality, it is also known for its good taste, reportedly being sweet but not too sweet, and free of waxy textures. Some attest to it being a bit grainy, but it is otherwise known to have an excellent taste and texture per customer reviews.
The pros of the Comvita Manuka honey products are plentiful. Because of their licensing through UMF, you can be assured that their products are true, pure Manuka honey and that you are not being charged for something that has been diluted or worse. Comvita also strives to stay connected with nature and feels responsible to care for it, which means besides just harvesting the earth’s resources, they are dedicated to caring for it and replenishing it responsibly. Additionally, its quality, effectiveness, and good taste are all supported by customer reviews. The only cons seem to be that it is a more expensive brand.
